Wiki@UCSF Frequently Asked Questions
Questions
Answers
- How can I access the wiki? Before you can access the wiki for the first time, your GALEN Account must be added to the wiki user database. Each wiki space has a Space Administrator who can help new users with this process. If you don't know the Space Administrator for the space you want to access, please contact the Wiki@UCSF Administrators. Once you've been given access, you'll need a web browser (Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) and an internet connection to start using the wiki.
- Do I have to be connected to the campus network? No. You can access the wiki from any computer with an internet connection. However, users located at some organizations (such as the San Francisco VA Hospital) may be blocked by their organization's firewall. These users may be able to use a VPN connection to access the wiki. For more information about VPN, visit the OAAIS website.
- How do I get a new wiki space?UCSF faculty and staff may request a space on Wiki@UCSF by completing the Wiki Space Request Form. Please read the Wiki@UCSF Use Policies and the Terms and Conditions before requesting a space.
- Can anyone view content on the wiki? No. Wiki access is limited to those who have been granted permission to access the wiki. All users must have a GALEN account and must be added to the wiki user database by an administrator before they can gain access to the wiki for the first time. Only those designated to have access to a space will be able to view it. Access is controlled by the Space Administrator and by the Wiki@UCSF Administrators who assign permissions to each space.
- What is a Space Administrator? The person who requests the creation of a wiki space is designated as the Space Administrator for that particular space. This person decides who will be able to view/edit content in the space and can modify the overall look and feel of the space. The Space Administrator must be UCSF faculty or staff.
- What resources are available to help people learn how to use the wiki?Within the wiki there is a Wiki Training space with information for users and Space Administrators, including basic and advanced editing tips. A brief wiki demonstration and training session conducted by Library staff can be arranged by contacting the Wiki@UCSF Administrators.
