Archives & Special Collections
Archives and Special Collections at the UCSF Library preserves and maintains unique materials to support research and teaching in the history of the health sciences for faculty and students across all campus disciplines.
 
Due to their unique and often fragile nature, these materials are available for access under supervised use and by appointment only. Contact us to make an appointment.
 
The Library also maintains a collection of published secondary sources in the history of the health sciences, available on the 5th floor for browsing and circulation.
 
 
ACCESS AND SERVICES
- Access and Use, including hours, contact info, and policy on access and use
 
- Papers of health care professionals associated with the UCSF campus such as current and former faculty and alumni.
- Institutional or organizational records from significant health care agencies, local hospitals, and professional societies relevant to the history of the health sciences in California.
 
- Document the University of California, San Francisco administrative functions and responsibilities.

- Include materials such as correspondence, minutes, reports, photographs, biographical files, and selected campus publications.

Rare and early editions of published works on many aspects of health and medicine, including works by Andreas Vesalius, William Harvey, and Samuel Hahnemann.
 
EAST ASIAN COLLECTION
Emphasizes the historical development of medicine and the health sciences in China and in Japan before 1900 and the transition period from traditional Japanese medicine to Western medicine.
 
 
CONTEMPORARY COLLECTING PROJECTS
Focus on research areas in the health sciences where UCSF has taken a leadership role.
