A new policy statement from Research Councils UK (RCUK), and from the individual UK research councils, will contribute movement towards making all publicly funded research freely accessible. In particular, three UK research councils (the Medical Research Council(MRC), the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)) have announced that they will mandate open access archiving for all the research that they fund. The statement from the (MRC) is especially important for biomedical researchers, as the MRC is the largest public funder of biomedical research in the UK.
