The UCSF Library and Center for Knowledge Management intermittently needs individuals for the positions of Library Assistant, classified as a Library Assistant I.
 
Duties
Casual Library Assistants perform shelving and related functions in the Library. Casual Library Assistants are expected to coordinate effectively with other shelvers and public services employees in a team-oriented work environment. Public service interaction is required and incumbents are expected to perform these duties in a helpful and professional manner. This is a physical position that requires shelvers to be on one's feet for several hours at a time and involves repetitive bending, squatting, kneeling, etc. Casual Library Assistants are also trained in other aspects of public services and may be required to staff a public services desk. Employees are expected to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with patrons and be able to work well as part of a public service team.
 
Required Qualifications:
  • -  Ability to lift heavy volumes (up to 20 lbs), push heavily-loaded book trucks, and shelve while on a ladder.
  • -  Ability to follow instructions, with excellent attention to detail.
  • -  Willingness to work weekday daytime hours, late evenings and weekends.
  • -  Reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • -  Knowledge of alpha-numeric/decimal systems and ability to file accurately and shelve efficiently & quickly.
Preferred Qualifications
  • -  Previous shelving or library experience.
  • -  Experience in a University of California Library.
  • -  Recent experience in an American academic or biomedical library.
  • -  Knowledge/experience-Library of Congress (LC) call number system.
  • -  Knowledge/experience-National Library of Medicine (NLM) call number system.
  • -  Knowledge/experience-MS Windows and MS Office applications.
Schedule
Schedules consist primarily of weekday afternoon/evening and weekend hours based on the operational need. Generally, Casual Library Assistants work 3-4 shifts per week for a total of 12-16 hours per week.
 
Compensation
Pay rate is $13.80 per hour. Evening shift differential of $0.72 per hour applies when 4 or more hours are worked after 5:00 p.m. This is a "casual" position without health and retirement benefits. Work-study okay for students from selected institutions.
