- How do I get EndNote?
- The Library does not distribute or sell EndNote. You can purchase a copy from the UCSF Technology Store, located in the Millberry Union Building West, or directly from the EndNote website. The UCSF Technology Store is a UCSF department, so in addition to accepting ATM and credit cards it also offers payment options through interdepartmental recharge.
- What training is available?
- Library staff teach a hands-on Getting Started with Endnote class that covers the basic skills required to get started using EndNote. You will learn how to create your own personal reference database and how to generate a formatted bibliography. Online tutorials are also available.
- Can I use EndNote on library computers?
- Yes, EndNote is installed on computers in all of the Interactive Learning Centers (ILCs), including Mission Bay. You will need a storage device, such as a ZIP disk or a flash drive, for your EndNote libraries and MS Word documents.
- Should I upgrade to a more recent version of EndNote ?
- EndNote X2 for Windows was released in June 2008 and the Mac version in September 2008. Go to this page for an overview of X2.
- If you have EndNote version 9.0.0 running under Windows you should consider upgrading to 9.0.1., which contains many enhancements. You can download the free patch from the EndNote Website.
- If you have EndNote 7.0 you may need to consider if it is worth upgrading, as version 7 is adequate for most users' needs.
- EndNote 8 introduced some useful enhancements such as unlimited file size, support for Unicode characters (Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Greek, etc.) and improved support for using EndNote on a hand-held device.
- When EndNote 8 was released, Library staff advised users not to upgrade due to a number of system bugs. Most of the major problems were resolved with the release of 8.0.2.
- Note: Libraries created with EndNote 8 and above are not compatible with earlier versions.

- How do I download references from PubMed?
Connecting Directly to PubMed using a Connection File

Click on the Connect button on the main toolbar to view a list of available connection files.

Highlight PubMed (NLM) then click on Connect.

Type your search terms in the search box and click on the Search button:

Run your search in PubMed@UCSF and select references you wish to transfer to EndNote.

Note that your search results will be automatically displayed in the Summary format:

Pull down the Display menu and choose the MEDLINE format:

Save references by selecting File from the Send to box:

In the Save dialog box, choose where you wish to save citations. PubMed will automatically name the file "pubmed-result.txt."

Click on the Import button on the main EndNote menu:

Use the Choose File button to locate downloaded PubMed references then open the Import Option menu and select Other Filters. Highlight the PubMed (NLM) filter then click on Choose.

- How do I download references from PsycINFO?
- Connect directly to PsycINFO (CSA) using the PsycINFO Connection File. Download the file into your EndNote/Connection Files folder.
- Which databases use a Filter, Connection File, and/or Direct Export?

- What is Direct Export?
- Direct export is the easiest way to get references from the library databases on GALEN into your EndNote library. This means that you can just click a link in the database and your selected references will automatically be inserted in your library. Currently, not all databases offer this function. For those which do, the exact procedure will vary. See Which databases use a Filter, Connection File, or Direct Export?
- How do I link records to UC-eLinks?
You can configure EndNote to link to UC-eLinks using the Open URL function.
- Open the EndNote program.
- From the Edit menu select Preferences. Scroll down and select OpenURL.
- Check the Enable OpenURL
- Change the OpenURL Path to http://ucelinks.cdlib.org:8888/sfx_local
- In the Argument box, simply replace WoS with EndNote.
- To use Open URL you must first open individual records then select URL/Open URL Link from the References menu.
- Open the EndNote program.
- How do I download book references from the Melvyl catalog?

The Melvyl Connection File
- The EndNote connection file for MELVYL is named University of California Library Catalog. If you do not have this you can download it from the Thomson ResearchSoft website. Place it in your EndNote/Connection file folder. Import using University of California Library Catalog Filter
- Download your search results in the TAG format to your own computer or a disk. Import your search results into EndNote by choosing the Import command from the File menu and selecting the University of California Library Catalog filter. The filter can be downloaded from the Thomson ResearchSoft website.
- Remember to save your records in the Short (Tagged) or Long (Tagged) print format.
- How do I modify the EndNote APA 5th style to show full journal titles in my bibliography?
STEP 1: Import list of full journal titles
- From the EndNote Tools menu select Open Term Lists, then Journals term list. Click on the List tab: Journals should be highlighted.
- Click on Import List button. Navigate to the Medical.txt file in the Program files/EndNote/Term Lists folder.
- Double-click on the Open button to import the list.
- Your Journal Term List should now display full titles in the left-hand column.
STEP 2: Modify APA 5th output style
- Select the APA 5th output style from the pull-down menu on the EndNote toolbar.
- From the EndNote Edit menu select Output Styles, then Edit APA 5th
- Open Edit APA 5th to display the style template.
- Click on Journal Names in the left-hand window. Under When Formatting Journal Names click on Journal names, then Full Journal Name
- From the EndNote File menu select Save As to save a copy of the modified APA 5th style. Give this a new name (e.g., APA 5th_JT) to distinguish it from the original APA 5th style.
- How do I modify the EndNote APA 5th style tocapitalize the first word after a dash or colon?
To change “Nursing today: a review” to “Nursing today: A review.”
- Open the APA 5th style template (use Edit APA 5th).
- Under Title Capitalization select Sentence style capitalization.
- From the EndNote File menu select Save As to save a copy of the modified APA 5th style. Give this a new name (e.g., APA 5th_Cap) to distinguish it from the original APA 5th style.
