HELP & HOW-TO

Creating PubMed RSS Feeds
PubMed RSS feeds allow you to
-
view the latest updates to your literature searches whenever you want by using a RSS feed reader;
-
get the latest updates without waiting for them to appear via email, which is the case when saving searches to My NCBI;
-
view any number of your saved searches all in one place, instead of receiving separate emails for each updated search, as is the case in My NCBI.
You will need to subscribe to an RSS feed reader before you can utilize the PubMed RSS feature. The CIT website has more about RSS and various types of feed readers.

View the multimedia tutorials on RSS and PubMed RSS Feeds, or follow the steps below.

Setting up a PubMed RSS Feed
1. Run a search in PubMed.
2. When you are ready to save the search for which you would like to receive updates, select the RSS Feed option in the Send To dropdown menu.
Select Rss Feed from Send To menu
3. Select the maximum number of items you would like to see from each update, from 15 to 100, rename your search if you wish, and choose Create Feed.
Click Create Feed button
4. On the next screen, select the orange XML icon.
5. From the new window that opens, copy and paste the URL of the page into your RSS feed reader to subscribe to the feed.
Copy the URL from the browser
You can now check for updates to your PubMed search whenever you want in your RSS feed reader.

Creating a Live Bookmark in Firefox
Tip
If you are using a Mozilla Firefox browser, you can subscribe to your PubMed RSS feed using a Live Bookmark, allowing you to read updates directly from the Bookmarks in your browser.
Here's how to create a Live Bookmark for your PubMed RSS feed:
1. Run a PubMed search in a Firefox browser.
2. Follow the same steps as listed above.
3. When the orange XML icon appears in the PubMed RSS screen (refer to step 4 above), you will also see a small orange icon Live bookmark icon in the bottom right corner of the Firefox browser.
4. Click on the orange icon at the bottom right of the browser. Click the "Subscribe to..." popup that appears.
5. When the Add Bookmark dialog box appears, change the name of the bookmark, if desired, and click OK.
Under your Bookmarks in the menu bar, you will now be able to view the latest updates to your PubMed RSS feed without having to open up a RSS feed reader:
Live bookmark displays the latest results for your search
