University of California special collections departments participate in a program to lend rare materials between the UC libraries.
Patrons can request special collections materials from another UC campus via the interlibrary loan request system in
Melvyl.
Requests will be reviewed by the head of special collections at the lending library, on a case-by-case basis, to determine the rarity and condition of the item. Requests will be filled only if they can be met without damaging and/or endangering rare and unique materials.
Materials loaned are generally non-manuscript materials in the form of books, pamphlets, serials, and microform. Requests may be filled by the provision of facsimile copies.
Loaned rare materials must be used under supervision in the special collections reading room of the borrowing campus.
