Archives & Special Collections

Archives and Special Collections at the UCSF Library preserves and maintains rare and unique materials to support research and teaching in the history of the health sciences.

Due to their unique and often fragile nature, these materials are available for access under supervised use and by appointment only. Contact us to make an appointment.

The Library also holds books and journals in the history of the health sciences for browsing and circulation. These may be located through the library catalog.

Manuscript Collections

The Manuscript Collections contain papers of health care professionals associated with UCSF as well as Institutional or organizational records from significant health care agencies, local hospitals, and professional societies relevant to the history of the health sciences in California.

UCSF Archives

The UCSF Archives chronicle the UCSF Campus and include materials such as correspondence, minutes, reports, photographs, biographical files, and selected campus publications

Rare Books Collection

Items in the rare books collection may be located using the library catalog.  

Dut to their unique and often fragile nature, rare books are available for access under supervised use and by appointment only.  

Special Collections maintains an extensive collection of rare published and printed resources on many areas of health, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, and homeopathy, as well as early pharmacopoeias, texts on materia medica, and herbals.

East Asian Collection

Emphasizes the historical development of medicine and the health sciences in China and in Japan before 1900 and the transition period from traditional Japanese medicine to Western medicine.
